Brief History
Described as ‘the Smoke that Thunders’ and ‘the greatest known curtain of falling water’, Victoria Falls are a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur on the Zambezi River, bordering Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Victoria Falls’ claim to be the greatest is based on a width of 1 mile and a height of 360 feet forming the largest sheet of falling water in the world. Columns of spray can be seen from miles away as over 200 million cubic feet of water per second plummet over the edge. The wide basalt cliff, over which the falls thunder, transforms the Zambezi from a wide placid river to a ferocious torrent cutting through a series of dramatic gorges.
The Falls, one of Africa’s major tourist attractions, is shared between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Each country has a national park to protect them.
When to Go
There are three distinct seasons: December to April is warm and wet; May to August is cool and dry; September to November is hot and dry. The best time to see Victoria Falls is May to June offering the best compromise between an impressive flow rate and the falls not being completely obscured by spray.
Currency
The official currency is the Kwacha in Zambia and the Zimbabwe Dollar in Zimbabwe.
Passport/Visa Requirements
A passport valid six months or longer after return and visa are required for US citizens for both Zambia and Zimbabwe.
