Brief History
The annual migration of herds in Northern Tanzania and Kenya is one of the world's most spectacular wildlife events. Often referred to as the ‘Greatest Show on Earth', The Great Migration is a movement of approximately 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra throughout the Serengeti and Masai Mara ecosystems.

The Serengeti hosts the largest and longest overland migration in the world, a biannual occurrence. Around October, nearly 2 million wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles travel from the northern hills toward the southern plains, crossing the Mara River, in pursuit of the rains. In April, they then return to the north through the west, once again crossing the Mara river. This phenomenon is sometimes called the Circular Migration. Predators follow the Wildebeest Migration closely, waiting for an opportunity to strike weak prey as they make their way into different territories.

Over 250,000 wildebeest alone will die along the journey from Tanzania to Masai Mara reserves in upper Kenya, a total of 500 miles. Death is often caused by injury, exhaustion, or falling prey to predators such as the big cats of the region.

When to Go
The migration is year round and continuous.   So, anytime is a good time.  The most important is to know where the animals will be and when they’ll be there.

December to March is calving season in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro areas.  Great game viewing can be found in the open plains.  April and May mark the long rainy season and migration moves west.  By the end of May, pastures are exhausted and migration moves north.  Mating occurs through June.

Around July/August, the migration crosses the Mara and Grumeti Rivers (where the famous, spectacular river crossings take place) and enters the Masai Mara until October.  November marks beginning of short rains and herd moves back to Serengeti.

Currency
The official currencies are the Kenyan Shilling and Tanzanian Shilling.

Passport/Visa Requirements
A passport valid six months or longer after return and visa are required for US citizens for Kenya and Tanzania.  Additional documentation may be required for other countries.
