Brief History
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only survivor or the original Seven Ancient Wonders. It is part of the Giza Necropolis, home of several pyramids and the Great Sphinx.  The three larger pyramids are thought to belong to Khuf, Khafre, and Menkaure: father, son, and grandson.  The smaller pyramids are believed to belong to female dependents and lesser relatives and it is widely thought that the Sphinx belonged to Khafre and has his head.

Built 4600 years ago, there are over 2 million blocks of stone incorporated in Khufu’s pyramid alone.  It is unknown how the pyramids were built, but the most popular theory is that gradual, sloping ramps built of wood, mud, and stone were used and the massive stones hauled with ropes of papyrus twine.  It is speculated that it took over 100,000 workers approximately 20 years to complete the Great Pyramid.

Originally, the pyramids had smooth limestone finishes.   They are now rough and rugged because subsequent rulers stole the surface limestone for their own monuments.
