Brief History
The Great Wall of China is a series of stone and earthen fortifications built to protect the northern borders between 5th century BC and 16th century. It began as independent walls for different territories and was not “The Great Wall” until Emperor Qin Shihuang united China and the walls to fend off the Hun invasions. The project united previously constructed walls plus new building and extensions until the wall snaked 5000 kilometers along China’s northern, eastern and western borders.
One of the best places to see the wall is in Beijing. The Beijing sections, primarily from the Ming dynasty, have been well preserved. It was designated as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1987 and has served as a monument of China in recent history.
Contrary to popular belief, the wall is not visible from the moon. But, there is evidence that it is visible, with binocular assistance, from the Space Station.
When to Go
Best times are Spring and Fall. Crowds are less dense and the weather is better - China can be scorching in the summer and quite cold in the winter.
Currency
The official currency is Renminbi and basic unit is yuan. It is possible to exchange traveler’s checks at most banks and hotels, though hotels generally only change money for guests. Your best bet is the ATM. Bank of China has a network that accepts major credit, debit, and ATM cards. Change only the amount needed, as Renminbi is not easily converted on the international market.
Passport/Visa Requirements
A passport valid six months or longer after return and visa are required for US citizens. Additional documentation may be required for other countries.
