Brief History
The Galapagos Islands is an archipelago of 13 major islands (five are inhabited) and 100 or so smaller islands and islets.  It is a province of Ecuador and became famous after Charles Darwin’s 1959 publication of The Origin of Species.  Studies by Darwin led to his theory of evolution by natural selection.

The Ecuadorian government declared the archipelago a national park to protect the natural species in 1959 and the non-profit Charles Darwin Research Station was established in 1964 to begin its conservation work.  In 1986 the surrounding ocean, comprising 50,000 square miles, was declared a marine reserve.

Renowned for unique species and pristine environment, the Galapagos is a favorite of scuba divers, nature lovers, and environmentalists.   Where else will you find a blue-footed booby?

When to Go
Because of its proximity to the Equator, the archipelago is visited year round.

Currency
The official currency is the US Dollar.

Passport/Visa Requirements
A passport valid six months or longer after return is required for US citizens.  No visa is necessary.  Additional documentation may be required for other countries.
