Brief History
Christ the Redeemer is a statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The statue stands 130 feet tall, weighs 700 tons and is located at the peak of Corcovado Mountain overlooking the city.
The statue's serene gaze over the city gives little hint of the Herculean effort that went into its construction. Over 1,000 tons of materials had to be moved up the 2300-foot high mountain. The statue took five years to construct and was inaugurated on October 12, 1931.
Today the site is visited by more than 300,000 tourists each year and is an icon of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil.
When to Go
The weather is warm to hot year round. Summer (November to April) is hot and humid. Carnival time is probably a more important consideration than weather for deciding when to visit Rio.
