Brief History
The “White Continent” is the earth’s southern most continent.  Situated on the South Pole and over 5 million square miles, 98% of its surface is covered by ice.  It is the coldest, windiest, driest place on Earth and due to the very limited precipitation it receives is technically the largest dessert on the planet. The Antartic Treaty, signed by 45 countries, prohibits military activities, supports scientific research, and protects the ecozone.  There are no permanent human residents, though research stations are staffed with scientists year-round.  Permanent residents (and the primary reason for tourists to visit) include penguins, fur seals, and whales, among others.

When to Go
Temperatures in winter drop to -130ºF.  The best time to visit is during the “mild” summer when temperatures average a balmy 30ºF, November – March.

Currency
There is no government, therefore no official currency.

Passport/Visa Requirements
Technically, because there is no government, no passport or visa is required.  However, you will need appropriate documentation for any countries visited before or after Antarctica.
