Brief History
The Alhambra is a palace and fortress complex overlooking the city of Granada in Spain’s Andalusia region. The name Alhambra comes from an Arabic word which means "red or crimson castle.” Created originally for military purposes, the Alhambra was an "alcazaba" (fortress), an "alcázar" (palace) and a small "medina" (city), all in one.
It was the residence of the Muslim kings of Granada and their court, and a renaissance palace during the Holy Roman Empire, thereby providing a unique mixture of architectural and decorating styles. The greatest concern of the architects of the Alhambra was to cover every single space with decoration, no matter the size of the space. No decorative element was enough. Walls are covered with beautiful and extremely rich ceramics and plasterwork and the coverings have wooden frames that have been exquisitely carved.
During the 18th century and part of the 19th, the Alhambra fell into neglect and was occupied by thieves and beggars. Napoleon's troops, masters of Granada from 1808 until 1812, converted the palaces into barracks and mined the towers and blew up part of them. In 1870 it was declared a national treasure and has been repaired and protected since.
